Exercise Highlight 25: Half Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch

Hip flexors are commonly referred by many as feeling tight and no matter how much stretching they do, they tend to fall back into this tight restricted feeling. Here is the proper way to directly stretch your hip flexors. However, stretching them alone is not always the answer.

Hip flexors can become weak and shortened, limiting our ability to extend from the hips. In one example, this can be caused by the excessive amount of sitting our society promotes and requires. In this scenario, they become weak and when a muscle becomes weak, it will create tension to mimic strength in order to create the necessary joint stability needed for every day movement. This will then lead to imbalances and compensations, further increasing the chance of injury to the lumbar spine, hips, knees, etc.

For many people, no matter how much they stretch their hip flexors and are told to do so, they fall quickly back into a tight limiting feeling. You will need to strengthen them to properly mobilize the area, as well as address the rest of the core which includes many other muscles other than your abdomen.
