This is a 10 week Advanced training plan, designed for competitive runners who have experience at the 50 mile distance. This plan can be adapted to a variety of runnable 50 miles with minimal changes (rolling terrain, very runnable climbs, 2 out of 5 technical rating, low altitude, etc.). For example, I ran my 50 mile road PR following a very similar training plan that included more road miles. The target mileage is 60 - 80 mile/weeks. The overall goal is to increase general fitness with an emphasis on trail speed and endurance. The intervals will increase trail speed & efficiency and the long runs will increase trail endurance, making your 50 mile pace goal feel easier. This plan can be adapted by runners who run more than once a day, but the workouts should always be completed in single sessions. Most of the mileage should be on trails, and preferably on terrain similar to your goal race.
