Iain - I have been involved in sports since my very early years and whilst soccer dominated, running was always my second sport and slowly it took over when I began to move around the world with my education and work. Following obtaining a degree in Marine Biology at Bangor University in Wales I moved to Scotland and completed a PhD in Physiology at Glasgow University. Whilst at Glasgow as a bet, I entered the 96 mile West Highland Way race when I was 22, DNF'd after 81 miles but got the bug and returned a few times to complete and further better my time. From my mid 20's mountain running, or fell running as we call it in the UK, dominated and I went on to compete for Wales, through residency eligibility, at various international events including the World Long Distance Mountain Running Trophy in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Although focus shifted to shorter distances and on the road I always maintained a strong interest in ultra-marathons and competed for Wales at the Annual Anglo-Celtic plate 100 km and the Commonwealth mountain and ultra championships back in 2009 at the 100km, finishing 11th. However my greatest success came at the 2013 IAU World Trail Running Championships where running for Great Britain we took team Gold, and I finished 4th overall. I have been re-selected for the 2015 World Trail Running Championships in Annecy, France at the end of May. In total I have ran over 50 marathons and ultra-marathons over the past decade including 13 road marathons.

On the roads I have ran 55:56 for 10 miles, 1:13:36 for a half marathon and 2:36:45 for the marathon. I particularly enjoy running with others and helping people develop the skills to have their own adventures. Back in the UK I co-founded and ran a guided mountain running business and now am assistant cross-country coach at Penn State University.

A truly epic day in Sports at the Breakneck Point Trail Marathon & 25k! Here are a few minutes of MPF RNR Athletes Ben Nephew & Iain Ridgway's race for the win after being side by side during the entire race on one of the toughest marathon courses in the world!
