When planning for your first ultra, leave projected times of finishing at home. Your number one goal is to have a good time, meet a lot of great people, learn about yourself and enjoy the scenery. It's a rare opportunity to have 20 plus hours with your self, to analyze your thoughts and to feel new things both physically as well as mentally, so enjoy it. Look at it as a journey of self exploration and a wonderful opportunity to connect with your mind, body and soul. The human body is an amazing machine and it's yours to experiment with and push its perceived limits.
Training for Ultra's is one big research project, this website was designed to offer you some basic guidelines of how to learn about what it takes to complete an ultra, other than just having a strong mind. Before considering to compete in an ultra of 50 miles or greater, it is very important that you have a solid base. Some examples are - Completed several marathons, you have a strong hiking & mountaineering background, you have completed an IronMan, competed in adventure racing and have the passion for excess. Mental strength, physical strength and endurance come in time and are developed through consistent & efficient training. If and when you have a strong foundation you won't only make it too the finish line of an ultra, you will enjoy the process of getting there.
I believe the growing popularity of ultra running came about when the sport found its self on the trails. Today most ultra's are on trails, the connection between the focus of the mind to keep pushing and the beauty that you are surrounded by, makes every step an awe inspiring adventure.
