In 1958 the New York Road Runners club held its first 30 mile race. The most famed ultra runner considered the "father of American ultra running is Ted Corbit; he won the inaugural NYRR 30 miler in 3:04.13. An Ultramarathon is any race or trail run that exceeds the standard marathon distance of 26.2 miles. Ultra running is a sport that maybe new to you but has a rich history. Ultra running has been somewhat of an organized sport since the 1950's, but it really started thousands of years ago when walking and running were the only means of communication, trading and exploration.
